Established in 1976 in Hartford, Connecticut, emerged during a critical period in design and construction. Recognizing the increasing complexity of technology and the industry, the institute brought together various stakeholders from contractors, subcontractors, suppliers, architects, engineers, insurance representatives, state commissioners, and corporate owners. Over time, membership expanded to include ancillary providers such as banking, finance, legal, real estate, accounting, bonding, and manufacturing. Originally affilated with the University of Hartford, the institute became an independent organization in 2020.
As a neutral and non-profit body, the Construction Institute serves as a platform for study, dialogue, information sharing, cooperation, research, education, meetings, and training. Its programs, courses, seminars, symposiums, and analyses promote ethical, competent, and efficient performance in the industy. Today, the institute offers education, certificate programs, online courses, books, regional meetings, social events, idea exchanges, and signature programs focused on visionary leadership and empowering women in construction. By fostering collaboration and multidisciplinary thinking, the Construction Institute continues to play a vital role in advancing the AEC industry and facilitating the exchange of experiences and knowledge for the common good.
